Cyril Arthur Farey was a well-regarded architect and watercolour painter. This drawing of Dingles (later House of Fraser) is a visual record of a pivotal moment in the architectural history of Exeter’s shopping areas in the post-War period. At the time of the painting private cars were permitted on the High Street, an area restricted to bicycles and public transport today. With the closure of House of Fraser in 2019 and the enormous impact of Covid-19 on the nation’s shopping habits in 2020 and 2021, the image now seems a reminder of a bygone age.Purchased with assistance from the Kent Kingdon Bequest and the Friends of RAMM, 2002
