Personal memories are also the theme of this piece (in the “Migration” section) by David Villalba (Arequipa, 1967). In the upper part of the work, we see the artist’s Puno-born parents; in the middle the same couple following their migration to the city of Arequipa, shown with their children; and around them individual portraits of each family member. Interspersed with the images, we find blocks of text which recount in the first person the personal history of each individual portrayed. The painting references, through the personal memories of Villalba and his family, the stories of many people from Puno, who in recent decades were forced by economic necessity to migrate to the city of Arequipa.
