As of 1890, Maurice Denis asserted himself as the theoretician of the Nabis, laying out the fundamental principles established by Gauguin. In this scene on the docks in the port of Loctudy, Breton people of all ages dance around the traditional Saint John’s Eve fire. In the background, other fires light up the bay at sunset.
