Artist: Derrick Nxumalo
Museum: High Museum of Art (Atlanta, United States)
Technique: Oil On Paper
Derrick Nxumalo’s colorful image of a pleasant seascape in Durban, the major city in South Africa’s Kwzulu-Natal province, masks the violent political tempest that swept Durban and much of the province in the early 1990s as a result of clashes between the African National Congress and the Inkatha Freedom Party supporters. The artist instead chose to focus on a tranquil aftermath that would briefly follow the democratic elections in 1994.
