Vaudreuil (1740–1817) was Vigée Le Brun’s most important private patron. A companion of the comte d’Artois, the profligate brother of the king, he was also the lover of the duchesse de Polignac, who obtained for him various remunerative appointments from the queen. In formal attire with orders and decorations, he presents a handsome if rather subdued figure.
