Here, Ernst Barlach captures a moment in the class warfare between impoverished peasants, shepherds and beggars and the rule of the Russian Tsar. This spirit of revolt culminated in the Russian Revolution of 1917 when Tsarist rule was overthrown and a new government of the people, the Soviet Union, was established
