A Masterpiece of Expressionism

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's "The Red Tower at Halle" is a stunning example of the artist's mastery of expressionism. Painted in 1915, this oil on canvas work showcases Kirchner's unique style and his ability to capture the essence of a scene. The painting is now housed at Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany.

The Red Tower: A Landmark of Halle

The painting depicts the so-called "red tower," a freestanding late Gothic bell tower with a Gothic brick base, one of the landmarks of the city of Halle. Kirchner portrays the tower from a strongly distorted angle, surrounded by high buildings and standing on the same square as the Marktkirche (the church to the left in the background). The square is depicted as such a strongly distorted angle that it seems to have been folded into the picture plane.

Kirchner's Unique Style

Kirchner's use of bold colors and distorted forms conveys a sense of unease and tension, reflecting the artist's own emotional state at the time. The painting is a powerful example of Kirchner's expressionistic style, which was characterized by his use of bright, bold colors and his ability to capture the mood and atmosphere of a scene.

About Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker and one of the founders of the artists group Die Brücke or "The Bridge," a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. He volunteered for army service in the First World War, but soon suffered a breakdown and was discharged. His work was branded as "degenerate" by the Nazi regime, and many of his works were confiscated and destroyed.
