In the early 1980s, Eros Bonamini (1942-2012) made a series of absorption paintings in which he traced marks with a felt-tip pen on canvases or papers, where form and time tend to become a tautological whole. In these works, the morphology of the icon—a line, a number, a word—derives by necessity from the time taken to make it. The artist declares this time and does so, for example, by writing with a marker on the canvas ‘in ten seconds
