Khnopff’s family spent summers on their property in the hamlet of Fosset in the Ardennes region of southeast Belgium. The artist made many paintings of the verdant countryside, which he described as a "silent landscape of heather and forests stretching along the long hills." His feathery brushwork and silvery palette capture the misty Belgian twilight and impart an air of melancholy to the tranquil scenery.
