The beginning of the twentieth century was a time of artistic innovation and experimentation in European painting. In Melody, British artist George Harcourt exhibits influences from various styles, including the intricate detailing of the Pre-Raphaelites, the psychological sensitivity of the Symbolists, and the attention to light and ambience of the Impressionists. The sitter plays music in a private setting, surrounded by dim lighting, but the red roses, a common symbol of passion and love, may hint at the object of the young woman
