Palm, the foremost Swedish painter of neoclassical landscapes, studied in Rome from 1841 until 1851. He visited the gardens of the Villa Borghese often, as attested by this work as well as numerous dated sketches now in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. He did not consider his oil studies to be finished works, but when a selection was exhibited in Stockholm in 1850, the public responded enthusiastically.
