Gyoshu (1894-1935) is known for applying the realistic portrayal learned from Western painting and Chinese painting to Japanese painting. He charmingly painted a huddled cat peacefully asleep as the soft light from the rising sun filling the atmosphere. Although flowers and leaves are not drawn, the way the tree is powerfully expanding its branches towards the sky is no longer wintry.
