The influence of the Italian painting of customs is here fully assumed. Moreover, the motif was fashionable in the mid-nineteenth century (for example, Fiandeira Napolitana by Silva Porto). Painted in Rome, at the beginning of his stay in Italy, this watercolor reveals an accurate technique, served by an assured drawing. There are, however, some concepts of oil painting that are transported to watercolor as is the case of the black of the shadow, which creates an excessively defined chiaroscuro. The freshness and transparency proper to the watercolor are present, creating a luminous revelation, indicative of his subsequent research.
