Ignatius Sichelbart (Chinese name, Ai Qimeng; 1708–1780) was a Jesuit who served as a court painter in the Qing palace. He painted the main features of the work using Western techniques; the Chinese-style landscape background was painted by a Chinese artist. Each facing page for each of the paintings has an encomium for the respective hound compiled by Liang Shizheng and Wang Youdun (1692–1758) and written by Ji Huang (1711–1794). Shown in various poses, the hunting dogs are realistically depicted with thin bodies. Judging from their appearance, the animals are mostly likely European thoroughbred hunting dogs.album leaf 1
