Preparatory sketch of a design for a folding fan in black ink and colour pigment. The fan is decorated with a pair of quails sitting amongst the grass beneath the full moon. Paper fans were an essential accessory in Japan’s hot and humid summers and an attractive image by a painter would make the product particularly desirable.
