Artist: Ishikawa Kangan, Toshitsuru (Birth Name)
Size: 71 x 44 cm
Technique: Painting
ISHIKAWA Kangan studied traditional Nanga* under KOMURO Suiun. He then established his own original style, taking inspiration from Western painting and the rich natural surroundings of his hometown. His approach also drew from the mōrōtai or hazy-style technique used by YOKOYAMA Taikan among other artists who, like Ishikawa, looked to Western art. In this piece, a distinct softness envelopes the shepherd and the mountains, something not commonly seen in other painters’ work. Despite great expectations for his future, Ishikawa passed away at the young age of 46.
