Jacqueline Stieger (b.1936) had a political affinity with the Green Party, and much of her work from this period in the 1970’s responds to threats to the environment such as acid rain and river pollution. When Stieger made Musselbank, it was becoming clear that the increasing pollution and acidification of the seas was prohibiting mussel growth. By 2050, scientists estimate that we will need 70–100% more food to feed an estimated nine billion people. Given that fish stocks are running low, farming bivalves (such as mussels and other shellfish) have been suggested by some to be a possible solution to world hunger, since they have minimal ecological impact.
