The Leeuwarden Series: Foreigners in the Service of the States-General The son of Wolfgang II and Magdalena, Countess of Nassau-Dillenburg, Philip Ernst served in the army of the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolf II (1552-1612), before taking over his uncle Philips’s regiment in the States army upon his death in 1606.43 He took part in the sieges of Gulik (1610) and Emmerich (1614), among others, and relinquished command in 1621.44 The prototype of this portrait has not been located.
