The Katzenelnbogen Series For Jan the Elder’s biography see the entry on De Geest’s Group Portrait of the Four Brothers of Willem I, Prince of Orange (SK-A-566). The ruff worn by Jan the Elder here is different from the one he has in De Geest’s portrait. The present work was probably copied after another, lost portrait of this Nassau count. Bikker (ed.), Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, I: Artists Born between 1570 and 1600, coll. cat. Amsterdam 2007, no. 396.
