Vanmour probably painted the portrait of Abdullah Efendi (1680?-1743). From 1718 this Greek priest was attached to the court in the function of Seyhül Islam and had to clear the field after the rebellion of 1730. He was banished, but returned quietly to Istanbul where he died in 1743. Abdullah had an impressive collection of legal religious documents and played a crucial role in the introduction of printing in the Ottoman Empire.
