During the summer months, well-off residents of Istanbul fled the cramped city to seek refreshment on the banks of the Bosphorus. The women who were part of the harem of the sultan and the grand visor on behalf of sometimes part of picnics and probably Vanmour wanted to depict such an occasion. Hunkiar Iskêléci was a well-known place on the Bosphorus where they met.
