Date: 1763
Size: 48 x 39 cm
Museum: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, United States Of America)
Technique: Oil On Canvas
Greuze exhibited this character study of a young boy at the Salon of 1763, at which time it belonged to the celebrated drawings collector Pierre Jean Mariette. Relatively rough brushwork is used throughout—the individual strokes are not disguised. This is deliberate and typical of studies that Greuze made from models rather than his commissioned portraits.
