A canvas produced as a preparatory study for the panel ‘Castile. The Bread Festival’ which would decorate the library at the Hispanic Society of America in New York. The great challenge for Sorolla of the Hispanic Society of America in New York commission meant he produced patient and laboured preparatory work. This canvas is part of this work and, in fact, the masculine figure to the right finally appears in the central part of the final panel. The characters in these preparatory paintings appear in full body and life-size, in a frontal position, forming couples or groups in almost photographic poses set in a more or less neutral setting. Attention is drawn to the outfit and the faces which show the physical differences characterising different regional types.
