This sketch, executed in brisk strokes with thinned paint in monochrome tones, is thought to reflect Dillis’s interest in English watercolor technique. In Rome, Dillis studied works by English landscape painters he admired, including Richard Wilson and Joseph Wright of Derby, as well as pictures by the Austrian master Joseph Anton Koch.
