A Masterpiece by Johannes Mytens

Johannes Mytens, also known as Jan Mijtens, was a Dutch Golden Age painter born in The Hague. He was trained by Anthony van Opstal and later by Nicolas van der Horst. Both of his uncles, Isaac Mijtens and Daniël Mijtens, were painters, and his son Cornelis became an engraver. Mytens became a member of The Hague Guild of Saint Luke in 1642 and helped set up the Confrerie Pictura. He painted for Dutch royalty and specialized in portraits.

Portrait of Jacoba van Orliens (1643-91), Jan Mijtens, c. 1660

This stunning portrait is a testament to Mytens' skill as a painter. It depicts Jacoba van Orliens, the wife of Jacob de Witte van Haamstede, in a three-quarter view, looking directly at the viewer. She is dressed in a fashionable gown and holds a fan in her right hand. The background features a rocky landscape with a rose bush on the left side. Portrait of Jacoba van Orliens (1643-91), Jan Mijtens, c. 1660 is one of six surviving pendant portraits by Mytens in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. The earliest of these is the pair of Jacoba van Orliens and her husband Jacob de Witte, a Zeeland regent. Both were painted in the same year, 1660, shortly after their marriage on 15 October 1659.
