Kaigetsudō"s vision of female beauty, though well received, was quite bold compared to that of his contemporaries. Statuesque figures colorfully dressed in striking patterns were the perfect foil for grand sweeps of his brush. This physically substantial femininity stands in stark contrast to the willowy figures favored by Suzuki Harunobu (1724–1770), a contemporary ukiyo-e artist who was also popular.
