Artist: Kang Suk-Keun
Museum: korea-craft-and-design-foundation (Seoul, South-Korea)
Technique: Lacquer
Kang Suk-Keun’s wooden bowl named “For You” can be put in a microwave, and is sturdy enough to contain hot food like stews. It is light and less than 3mm thick, and you can wash it using dish soap. The reason why this artist’s work is so practical can be attributed to “thermosetting.” This is a method of varnishing wooden bowls by putting lacquered woodware in a kiln that is over 200 degrees Celsius. Through this method, the usual lacquer smell disappears and many limitations of wood can be overcome. The line of the bowl is beautiful, making it equal to an art object.
