Artist: Katsushika Hokusai
Date: 1811
Museum: Kobe City Museum (Kobe, Japan)
Technique: Woodblock Print
Most of numerous color prints by Hokusai were printed on single ōban papers. There are a few diptych or triptych prints by him, but this quantity is far smaller than that of any other ukiyo-e masters. Moreover, there is no pentaptych nishiki-e by Hokusai except this work that depicts a panoramic view inside a vast brothel in Yoshiwara. While some other impressions are reported to be in various collections around the world, this pentaptych in the Kobe City Museum seems to be conserved in the best condition.
