Girl in Kimono – (Katsushika Taito Ii) Previous Next

Artist:

Date: 1800

Museum: Hill-Stead Museum (Farmington, United States)

Technique: Print

Created by a lesser known ukiyo-e artist, Girl in Kimono was executed by Katsushika Taito, and there is little information about the piece. The print portrays a woman, whose head faces away from the viewer, flashing her decorated hairpiece and style. Her vibrant and layered clothing swallows her body, obscuring the entirety of the woman but the side of her face. To the viewer, the clothes serve as a mask, with the striking colors and accessories hiding the woman’s identity and true self from the public.
