天女が花の芳香によって悪い鬼神を退却させ、仏を迎えようと場を清める場面。天女の鮮やかな装飾は、ぼかしを使わず淡い色から濃い色へ、段階的に変化をつけて塗り分ける「繧繝彩色」という技法で表現されています。日本では奈良時代から建築、絵画、工芸などで盛んに用いられてきた伝統的な技法です。茨城県笠間市に生まれた木村武山(1876-1942)は、下村観山や横山大観らと同様、東京美術学校で岡倉天心の教えを受け、のちに日本美術院で活動。晩年は病気を患い、本作のようにのびやかな線が引けないという絶望に陥ります。しかし、左手で絵を描く練習を重ね、亡くなる5年前に「左武山」として画家に返り咲き、生涯絵筆を執り続けました。
