Louis Baader's painting "Remorse" depicts an episode from the life of Orestes, the son of Agamemnon, the mythical king of Mycenae. To avenge the murder of his father by his mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus, Orestes killed the murderers. Haunted by his guilt and pursued by the Erinyes, goddesses of vengeance, Orestes looks dazed and frightened at the sight of the bodies. By painting Orestes and Clytemnestra naked, Baader demonstrates to the Academy his mastery of anatomy—an important skill for a history painter—while enthralling Salon audiences who loved sensual nudity. The picture was painted in 1875. The original painting is in the Musée d'Orsay. The picture is made with oil on canvas and has dimensions: height - 376, width - 295 cm.
