Artist: Luca Carlevaris
Date: 1709
Size: 51 x 120 cm
Museum: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, United States Of America)
Technique: Oil On Canvas
Populating the Piazza with energetic Venetians, Carlevaris gives this rendering of the Piazza San Marco a lively cast. The Square is framed by the Procuratie Vecchie on the left, and the Procuratie Nuove on the right. The basilica of San Marco and Torre dell’Orologio rise in the distance. Carlevaris is known to have carefully studied his figures prior to laying them in on canvas, and while no such studies exist for the laborers and gondoliers in this painting, his numerous extant oil sketches of Venetian ladies and gentlemen in other museum collections attest to this practice.
