In 1958 Fernández and two other artists revolutionized the Costa Rican art world by introducing the country to abstract art. She studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Costa Rica where she later taught for 32 years. More art training followed in Bogotá, Colombia and Florence, Italy. Now, she divides her time living in Costa Rica and Geneva. In 2007, at age 68, she completed a 57 meter long mural opposite the National Gymnasium in San Jose entitled “Immersed In Time.” It features 7 faces in black and white gazing at different parts of the city.
