European gold and silver pieces were of an extraordinary quality, and their rich iconography illustrated theological concepts. This chalice, with a smooth wide cup, a hexagonal stem with blind windows decorated with Gothic tracery and an enamel background, depicts the Double Credo, an iconography that can be traced back to the 12th-century gold and silversmiths of the River Meuse region.
