Long, burgundy-coloured velvet coat with polychromatic decoration printed in beige, blue, green and golden, depicting floral motifs: pomegranates reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance, thistle blossoms and pine cones. The sleeves, voluminous and flared, are gathered at the shoulder and have a grey chinchilla fur trim at the cuff, to match that of the round neckline. It closes at the front at chest level, with a tear-shaped button made of wood and lined with silk over which a web sewn of metal and silk threads is placed. This garment was inspired by the gowns or coats, made in the 15th century for the European elite. Fortuny designed it for the costumes of the play, Othello, directed by Pietro Scharoff and performed in the cortile (courtyard) of the Doge’s Palace in Venice.
