About the artist: John C. DeGrasse (MSgt, USMC) (1919-1989) John DeGrasse earned an associate’s degree from the Portland School of Fine Arts. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1940 and served on the Presidential Guard Detail at Camp David, Maryland.DeGrasse was assigned to Leatherneck magazine and the Marine Corps Gazette for much of his career, painting over 100 covers. He later served as the noncommissioned office r of the 1st Combat Art Team, assigned to the 1st Marine Division in Korea. He worked as the art director for Leatherneck magazine after he retired from the Marine Corps. DeGrasse died in September 1989.
