In the play Suehirogari, a daimyo master sends his servant, Tarokaja, to buy a suehiro, an auspicious name for a fan. Because Tarokaja does not understand this term, he is easily tricked by a dishonest merchant at the market into buying an old umbrella. This painting captures the interaction of master and servant upon his return. Tarokaja sings and dances with the umbrella, and his master cannot remain angry for long.
