Mei Qing’s most prolific period as a painter was from 1690 to 1695. Specializing in the intimate format of the album, he often returned to a familiar set of compositional types that he varied slightly in each execution. In this album, Mei presented his highly personal interpretations of the old masters, treating his models creatively as points of departure for his own highly original compositions. Mei further enhanced the variety of images by alternating grand panoramas with intimate close-ups and by using a different seal on all but one leaf.
