From the artist, Michelle Kalman: “Fertility” embodies the essential elements I explore intuitively in my work. The organic gesture seems ready to burst open and grow, expressing the tension of latent potential to transform. At the same time, supple curves fold onto themselves to convey intimacy and vulnerability in the moment. Soft, warm color variations from smoke during firing enliven the surface, while a hidden pool of glass reflects sparkling stillness at its core. When a sculpture reveals harmonious balance between such dynamic contrasts, it feels magical to me.
