Although Modigliani is today most famous for his nudes, in his time and among his circle of friends, the artist was known primarily as a portraitist. He was a chronicler of the vie bohème of Montparnasse, the district of artistic life in Paris, and the vast majority of Modigliani’s paintings are, in fact, portraits. In mid-1916, the artist participated in a small portrait exhibition, organized by his dealer Paul Guillaume in the studio of Modigliani’s friend, the painter Émile Lejeune (Swiss, 1885-1964). Also, in 1916, Modigliani developed his signature elongated style. Inscribed on this portrait of his friend Lejeune is “á Lejeune le toujours jeune, Modigliani 11 Dec 16,” and indeed Lejeune will always remain “jeune” (young) to us in this work of art.
