ルドンはフランスのボルドー出身。1857年頃ある植物学者と知り合い、生物の神秘を知り、哲学や文学への関心を強めた。1863年、パリのエコール・デ・ボザールに入るが、1865年に退校。銅版画技法を学び、幻想的な版画や素描の制作を始める。1878年にはファンタン・ラトゥールから石版画の技法を学び、翌年、最初の石版画集『夢の中で』を刊行。その後マラルメ、ボードレールなど象徴主義の文人たちと親交を結び、1890年までにフロベールの『聖アントワーヌの誘惑』、ボードレールの『悪の華』などの挿し絵を制作、怪奇な幻想シーンを白と黒の世界で表現する。ルドンは「真の芸術は感じられる芸術である」と言う。そのように芸術における感性や精神性を重視したことから象徴主義の画家とも呼ばれる。1890年以降になるとパステルや油彩を用いた華麗な色彩表現へ移行し、怪物や天使、少女や花などを主題に夢幻的世界を描いた。本作品も同時期のものである。ここでの主役は、花というより青い花瓶。背景の地色に溶け入りそうなキンセンカの地味な色合いに比べて、花瓶の色の鮮やかさと妖艶さが目立っている。曖昧模糊とした虚空に浮かぶ燐光を放つこの花瓶は、ルドン芸術の重要なテーマである《出現》を連想させるものがある。
