岡田三郎助は佐賀県出身。1887年曾山幸彦に師事した後、黒田清輝の天真道場に入門、白馬会の創立メンバーの一人となった。1897年から5年間、西洋画で初の文部留学生として渡仏、黒田の師ラファエル・コランに師事した。1902年に帰国後、東京美術学校の教授に就任。1912年には藤島武二とともに本郷絵画研究所の設立に参加し、多くの後進を育てた。1937年に第1回文化勲章を受章。近代日本の官展系洋画を代表する画家であると同時に、染織品のコレクターとしても知られる。 美術史家・黒田鵬心は「京都の丸紅商店の催で美術家の新図案による染織品の会があった。その世話をしていた私は（岡田先生に）度々お願して出来たのは唯一回ではあったが、紙で着物の型を作り全部原寸で模様を描かれ頗る凝ったものが出来上がった。」と記している（大隈為三・辻永編『畫人岡田三郎助』1942年、春鳥會、pp.189-190)。スミレやナズナ、オサバグサ、カルネア、イソツツジなど春から夏にかけて咲く山野草が精確に描かれたこの図案がその作品ではないかと、断定はできないものの、そう推量される。
