Naranja is inspired by the resilience of women that suffer harassment and violence on a daily basis, everywhere in the world. The name of the piece, as well as the color in the background, represent energy and warmth, both traits that relate with women’s female power and their love of their roots. As an artist, Pauline Franceríes Galo hopes to inspire women and girls to appreciate and use that infinite female power they all carry inside. This work features a strong woman and emphasizes her posture and broadened shoulders. Her serious face conveys confidence and reassurance in herself, avoiding any hint of attitude. There is often a disconnect between femininity and confidence, especially in portraits by male artists. Make-up, often used to enhance the appearance of femininity, can sometimes undermine a woman’s confidence and natural beauty. Here, Galo’s artwork reclaims makeup as a tool of self-expression and a matter of individual choice.Text credit: Produced in collaboration with the University of Maryland Department of Art History & Archaeology and by M.
