Kirkeby has been cultivating landscape painting in a modern, picturesque idiom since the middle of the 1970s. He has frequently found his motifs in Greenland, where he has stayed many times and also worked as a geologist, or the island of Læsø where he lives in the summer. Kirkeby usually uses a subdued Nordic palette. He builds up his paintings layer by layer in a time-consuming, laborious process. His decorative works at Christiansborg have a sublime appearance as a total installation with the broad spectrum of colours in the paintings against the background of the red wall, a colour chosen by Per Kirkeby. Author: Lisbeth Bonde, M.A and art critic. Photographer: Torben Eskerod.
