Rajendra Dhawan graduated from the Delhi College of Art in 1958. He then went to École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in the 60’s he studied art in Belgrade. Back in India, he founded a group called The Unknowns while he exhibited his work and taught at a college in Punjab. In 1970, he decided to move to Paris, rarely visiting India.Dhawan’s paintings are characterised by quiet colour fields which harmoniously blend in together. His strokes give texture. The application of the paint evokes a lightness, giving his work the quality of intangible, spiritual timelessness.Dhawan held several exhibitions of his work in India and Europe. His work is represented in several collections in India and France, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Jehangir Nicholson Collection, the Lalit Kala Akademi, the Bharat Bhavan Museum and the National Foundation of Contemporary Art, Paris. Dhawan passed away in 2012.
