Artist: Robert Rauschenberg
Date: 1976
Size: 213 x 102 cm
Technique: Fabric
In 1975 Rauschenberg had an artist’s residency in Ahmedabad, India, a city famous for its textile production. While there, Rauschenberg became inspired by the local fabrics, and soon after his return to the United States, he created his Jammer series. In these works, the artist cut large, monochromatic swaths of silk or satin procured in India and either pinned them to the wall or attached them to poles, so they hung and moved like sails or flags (the series’ title is a reference to a "windjammer" sailboat). Vow, (Jammer) is distinctive within this body of work for the way it articulates itself away from the wall, assuming a sculptural presence in the room.
