In 1971, while attending a National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference in Toronto, Meyers visited the Royal Ontario Museum, where he came across Japanese ware for the first time; he was immediately attracted to its spontaneous, gestural approach. Influenced by this experience, Meyers began using a Japanese Shino glaze, a type of satiny glaze that ranges in color from white to orange depending on reduction, with his primarily stoneware clay bodies.
