Shepard Alonzo Mount created this portrait of his wife Elizabeth Hempstead Elliott Mount after their marriage. He was already a well-known artist who started as an apprentice to a carriage builder. He later studied painting and eventually opened his own portrait studio in New York City with his brother, William Sidney Mount. After he married Elizabeth, he continued to paint landscapes, still lifes, and portraits.
