Das Thema der Darstellung wurde in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten mit verschiedenen Frauengestalten der griechischen Geschichte in Verbindung gebracht, die einen Giftselbstmord planten, unter anderem Sophonisbe und Monime. Seit den 1950er Jahren identifiziert man die Darstellung jedoch als Geschichte der Artemisia, die im vierten Jahrhundert vor Christus lebte.
