Small sliding doors like this pair were made for the storage shelving found beside display alcoves (tokonoma) in the reception rooms of traditional Japanese houses and were often beautifully painted. The stylized landscape forms and lavish coloration in contrasting blue, green, and gold create a dreamlike aesthetic world characteristic of Edo Rinpa styles. The doors are fitted with cloisonné enamel handles with paulownia motifs.
